Additionally, Gregory Z. Smith has served on the Las Esperanzas (http://www.las-esperanzas.com/) committee charged with locating and selecting winning designs for gateways into the historic Mesquite Area/Original Townsite. He has given tours of that neighborhood and of the historic Alameda/Depot Neighborhood in conjunction with the Branigan Cultural Center (http://www.las-cruces.org/Departments/Public%20Services/Services/Museums/Branigan%20Cultural%20Center.aspx).
Greg has also given tours of the Paleozoic Trackways discovery sites in conjunction with the Las Cruces Museum of Natural History (http://www.las-cruces.org/Departments/Public%20Services/Services/Museums/Natural%20History%20Museum.aspx), both before and after the area was designated a National Monument. In the effort to obtain National Monument status for the Trackways, he also gave tours to BLM officials and U. S. Congressman Harry Teague, and he visited both Washington, D.C., and Santa Fe, New Mexico, to raise awareness and support for the designation.
In his capacity as board member and president of Downtown Las Cruces Partnership, Greg has been to national and state meetings and conventions, has served on several DLCP committees, has worked with elected and appointed office holders from the City of Las Cruces, the State of New Mexico, and the United States. He has participated in SalsaFest!, Winter Fest, and other activities on Main Street and for downtown revitalization. Some of the things of which he is proudest are the work being completed on La Placita, the plans being developed for 201 North Main (formerly the Camuñez Building), and the Façade Squad efforts in conjunction with New Mexico MainStreet.
As part of his various efforts, Greg has met with U.S. Senators Domenici, Bingaman, and Udall; U.S. Representatives Pearce, Teague, Wilson, Lujan, and Heinrich; New Mexico Governors Carruthers, Richardson, and Martinez; our local State Senate and House of Representatives delegation; as well as cabinet secretaries and department directors.
He continues to swim competitively at the national level in the Senior Olympics and U.S. Masters Swimming as well as taking time to jury design work at DACC (http://dabcc.nmsu.edu/Programs/ddt.shtm) and at the Architecture Discovery Camp (http://dacc.nmsu.edu/adc/).
